Statistical Service Unit (SSU),  Dept. of Mathematics

Statistical Service Unit (SSU)

The Statistical Service Unit (SSU) was established to provide professional statistical services to the university community as well as the wider society. The unit aims to support research, promote the effective application of statistical methods, and enhance statistical literacy through consultancy, training, and collaborative activities. In addition, the SSU serves as a platform for students to develop practical skills and gain hands-on experience by engaging in real-world statistical applications under academic guidance.

Vision

To provide the best statistical services for the community.

Mission

The mission of the Statistical Service Unit is to:

  • Provide a broad range of statistical services to support research activities, including research planning, experimental design, data collection, data analysis, and interpretation.
  • Promote the appropriate and effective use of statistical methods in research and decision-making.
  • Provide training on statistical software packages such as Minitab, SPSS, SAS, R, RStudio, STATA, and EViews.
  • Conduct workshops, seminars, and training programmes related to statistical applications and research methodology.
  • Create opportunities for students to learn statistics through real-world problems and practical experiences.

Functions and Services

1.Conducting workshops and courses

The SSU organizes workshops and training programmes based on current needs and requests. Details of upcoming workshops and training programmes will be published on this webpage.

Workshops are supposed to be conducted:

Workshops

The following workshops are expected to be conducted:

  • Workshop on Data Analysis
  • Workshop on Design of Experiments and Analysis
  • Workshop on Time Series Data Modeling
  • Workshop on Non-parametric Analysis
  • Workshop on Statistical Quality Control
  • Workshop on Statistical Modeling
  • Workshop on Hypothesis tests
  • Workshop on Research Methodology

Courses

The following academic and professional courses are planned to be offered:

  • Short Course in Statistics
  • Certificate Course in Statistics
  • Diploma in Statistics

2. Statistical Consultancy Services

The SSU provides a wide range of statistical consultancy services to both the university community and external organizations or individuals. Depending on the nature and scope of the service required, service charges determined by the SSU may apply.

Consultancy Areas

Services include:

  • Research and survey planning
  • Experimental design
  • Data collection methods
  • Sampling design
  • Questionnaire design
  • Data analysis
  • Statistical Modeling
  • Interpretation of results
  • Report writing and presentation of findings

3. Outreach programmes

Upon request, the SSU conducts workshops, seminars, and training programmes for communities and organizations outside the university. Requests for such programmes should be made in writing to the coordinator of the Unit (karunarathnak@esn.ac.lk) with a copy sent to the to Head of the Department of Mathematics (head_mathematics_fos@esn.ac.lk).

Examples of Outreach Activities

  • Seminars for school students
  • Training programmes for employees and organizations
  • Community awareness programmes on statistical applications

4. Collaborations:

The SSU encourages collaborations among internal and external researchers, institutions, and organizations to promote interdisciplinary and collaborative research activities. The unit aims to strengthen partnerships that contribute to research development, knowledge sharing, and practical problem-solving through statistical applications.

5. Procedure for Obtaining Services

Clients are expected to make an appointment with the Coordinator of the SSU via email (karunarathnak@esn.ac.lk), with a copy sent to the Head of the Department of Mathematics (head_mathematics_fos@esn.ac.lk). During the initial discussion, clients may communicate their requirements, expected time frame, and any other relevant details related to the requested service.

After receiving the service, clients are requested to complete a feedback form to provide information regarding the service received and their level of satisfaction.

Internal research students are advised to communicate through their respective supervisors and submit a list of the required services.
